The government says that there are no immediate concerns over gas supplies, despite surging wholesale prices, with the government saying that the UK currently has enough capacity to meet demand.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said that there was ‘no immediate concern’ and the government was aware about the impact that rising energy prices could have on low income households.

There are also concerns over food supplies, with two fertiliser plants being forced to close due to the price rise, leading to concerns over supplies of carbon dioxide, which could lead to a shortage affecting supplies of meat products.

The price rise has led to small energy firms being dragged to the brink of going bust, with a few possibly going out of business this coming week.
