Shortly after Christmas, Diane spent five days on Teme Ward at Hereford County Hospital battling COVID-19. With the birth of her first grandchild imminent and knowing that the majority of her family had the virus, this sure was a very stressful and emotional time for Diane.

Unfortunately Diane is struggling to sleep due to the memories of the short stay that spent in hospital.

To try and focus her mind, Diane has put together a short poem about her experience. We think it’s great.

The COVID It Came Calling Me:

I’d thought I’d fought it off you see

It came with a vengeance to embarrass me

At first I could not even retain my pee

The fever, the cough, the pure despair

The agony, each breath I took I could get no air

The loneliness in this hospital bed

Wishing I was actually dead

Crying for my family, crying to no longer be

Pounding head, racing heart. Vomiting and lethargy

Please god will you now take me

I’m hot, I’m scared, I’m all alone

My family need me there at home

Nurses, steroids, oxygen pills

Injections, water, battle of wills

Don’t take me now I haven’t said goodbye

This is no way to die

Fighting, battling you will not win

I’m not ready to go, I won’t give in

One more night, one more day

Please lord let me stay

The COVID it came calling me

But it wasn’t my time, I’m not ready you see.
