Boris Johnson has confirmed that customers visiting pubs and restaurants should leave the premises once their meal is finished in areas that are under Tier 2 restrictions.

Mr Johnson said: “We’ve been clear that, in Tier 2 I believe, that you need to have a substantial meal if ordering any alcohol.”

He said “once the meal is finished, it is at that point” that people should leave the premises.

According to its COVID-19 winter plan: “Venues that serve alcohol can only remain open where they operate as if they were a restaurant, which means serving substantial meals (and accompanying drinks).”

The guidelines define “substantial meals” as “a full breakfast, main lunchtime or evening meal”.
