After an unprecedented year, once again Hereford Sixth Form College students continue to perform on a national scale against the top-performing independent schools. 37% of those who applied for Oxbridge have places (against a national average of fewer than 20%) and 100% of applicants for medicine (against a national average of around 10%)!  20 students are off to study medicine, three of whom are going to be studying at Oxford and Cambridge! Overall, 20 students are off to Oxbridge, for courses as far-ranging as PPE, Law, Linguistics, and Economics and Management. Another particular success has been the STEM subjects, with three students reading Natural Sciences, two for Computer Science, as well as two for Biochemistry! Three students applied on their gap year, as the Careers department continues to support students even once they are no longer at the College.

‘Reach’, the College’s support programme for high achievers, provides bespoke support for gifted and talented students, including preparation for the admissions tests, 1-1s for personal statements, and weekly preparation classes.

Vicky Orsmond, creator of the Reach programme said: “Once again I am delighted by my students’ results. They have been heroic in the way they have gone about their studies this year, as they adapted to the new learning environment of Teams during lockdowns, then returning for full exams at the end of the year. Their resilience and drive has paid off and proves that our students are on a par with the best students in the country. I am so proud of all my Reach students, as they were able to choose the right courses for them.”

Principal Peter Cooper added, “We are proud of all our students, and many are now taking alternative career pathways such as apprenticeships. However, it is wonderful to see that we continue to punch well above our weight for our local students enabling them to flourish on these highly competitive courses and at the top universities in the country.”
