We love hearing your stories of Hereford’s past times and this one from Richard Sockett is fantastic.

Richard said:

“I’m a bit of a film fan, so it was great to find these pictures of the old Odeon in High Town. It really was a classic Art Deco building, as the interior photo shows. I remember that view as if it was yesterday, happy memories including the Saturday morning picture club! If I remember rightly, there was a fire exit to the right of the auditorium? – and it wasn’t exactly unknown for kids to sneak in up the stairs for free!”

Richard’s comments provoked a cracking discussion and some great replies with people from across Herefordshire sharing their memories.

Sue Smith said: “I remember queuing half way around high town to see Grease when it was released.”

Yvonne Hart said: “Loved the Odeon, what a dreadful shame it was demolished. I remember going to the Saturday morning pictures the day we moved into Hereford from Fownhope, must have been 1958/9.”

Mark Andrew Farmer said: “Sneaked in up those stairs a few times! Just wait until the audience left on the previous showing.”

Val Morgan said: “Unfortunately we have lost all the lovely buildings we had. Ferris’s, Greenlands, Augustus Edwards and yes the Odeon was another, shame really.”

Tim Jones commented saying that he still has a ticket from the Odeon! Here it is….
