Genealogy is not just about researching parish registers or questioning relatives these days. Family historians are increasingly turning to science to try and map out their origins, and there are a growing number of commercial processes available for budding gene detectives.

For anyone who is unsure how to get the best out of this developing area of research, help is at hand. Expert genealogist Barbara Griffiths, from the Guild of One-Name Studies, will visit Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre to share the different types of DNA tests available and what they can tell us. She will also consider the main companies providing this service, showing what their results look like and how they can be interpreted.

Senior Archivist Rhys Griffith said:

“Modern science is able to provide increasingly detailed insights into the history of our families but it can be a confusing field for the newcomer. We’re delighted that Barbara is coming along to offer guidance and to share her knowledge in this way.”

The talk will take place at Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre, 1pm on Monday 19 August. Tickets cost £6 and booking is essential. To book a place email archives@herefordshire.gov.uk
